Ksheerapaka, or ksheerakashaya, is a type of Ayurvedic preparation that literally means "cooked milk" or "milk decoction". Most decoctions are very astringent and drying but the addition of milk allows it to be more nourishing. It's better suited for those who have weaker digestion such as children, the elderly and people who are sick. This makes a terrific bedtime tonic or afternoon pick-me up depending on what herbs are employed.

To make it take 1 part fresh herb, 8 parts milk and 32 parts water.

However if you are using dry herbs then change the ratio to 1:15:15
  1. Initially add the herb to the water and simmer until it is reduced by 25%.
  2. Strain
  3. Add the milk and then reduce by half.

Another way to think about it is:
  1. Add 10-15 g of herbal powder to 1 quart or 4 cups of water.
  2. Reduce to 1 glass aka 25%
  3. Filter
  4. Add one glass of milk. Total volume will now be 2 cups.
  5. Reduce again to one glass

If you are feeling particularly unenergetic, then the easiest method would be to add everything and then reduce by half.

Why filter the herbs before adding the milk? Wouldn’t that further infuse everything? My Ayurvedic doctor instructed me to filter before the milk because the milk may get absorbed into the herbs. Although, I do think that you may be missing out on some of the fat soluble compounds. Perhaps I will try it both ways?

Herbs to try:
  • Turmeric
  • Ashwagandha
  • Shatavari
  • Schizandra
  • Ginseng
  • Reishi
  • Chaga
